I have just found someone selling T-shirts with a print of the Space Mercenaries Cover. (FusionTees.com). A shame that is upside down! Still I might have to give in and order one.

As it has been a mere 3 years since I posted to this blog I thought it might be time to finally do another post! The picture here is the cover from the Japanese edition of The Rim Gods. Most of Chandler's novels were published in Japan. He wrote of one trip to Japan:

"I fell in love with Japan. I especially enjoyed travelling between the various cities by train - everything from the famous bullet trains to the little locals. It was good to meet so many Faithful Readers - although the autograph sessions in various bookshops were more than a little wearing. I was Guest of Honor at that year’s Science Fiction Convention in Yokohama. I had learned how to manipulate chopsticks before leaving Australia so I had no trouble with the food. (Unluckily, though, I had not learned how to sit cross-legged at the table, and every time I tried it the services of two strong girls were required to disentangle me.)" - A Bertram Chandler (

A Bertram Chandler - Science Fiction Author and Master of the Rim Worlds

Monday, March 10, 2003

Chandler was the last master of the aircraft carrier Melbourne. Law required it to have a master aboard for the months while it was laid up and waiting to be towed off to Asia to be broken up for scrap, so in a sense he really was briefly the master of the Australian navy's former flagship. Apparently he had his typewriter aboard, and worked on his novels! I wonder if the Melbourne made up any of the metal in John Grimes ship as he start his long trip to the Rim.
